Türkiye is celebrating Victory Day today, Report informs.
The holiday marks the decisive victory at Dumlupınar on August 30, 1922, concluding the war led by Commander-in-Chief Mustafa Kemal Atatürk that began on August 26.
This victory prevented the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire-which had emerged defeated from World War I-by enemy nations. It is considered the most crucial phase of the Turkish War of Independence, which lasted from 1919 to 1922.
First observed in 1923, Victory Day was officially declared a national holiday in 1926. August 30 is also celebrated as Turkish Armed Forces Day.
