As part of the NATO mission in Afghanistan, the Italian military will leave the country entirely in the coming weeks, Report informs referring to TASS.
La Stampa newspaper reported that 20 percent of 800 remaining troops have already returned to their homeland.
The Italian contingent, which has now reached more than 900 people, has been in Afghanistan for almost 20 years in three missions. Despite repeated attempts to end the presence, the Italian authorities have postponed the withdrawal at the request of the US.
During this time, 54 Italians died there. The withdrawal of the contingent is carried out following the earlier decision of US President Joe Biden and the NATO leadership.
